Magnetic Therapy
MAGNETIC THERAPY has been used for centuries to aid healing of the body. In ancient China, India, Egypt, Persia and Greece it's path was both known and followed. The Russians also have a long history of it's use. A number of famous scientists, including Louis Pasteur (the developer of the process of pasteurization which still bears his name), were interested in the biological effects of magnets upon living systems. Through the centuries different medical practitioners have advocated the use of magnets in relieving pain, constipation, fatigue and a host of other medical problems but it was only in the late 20th century that scientific research in the area of magnetic and electromagnetic fields' effects upon living systems has really taken off. Recently, even conventional physicians have shown some interest in the therapeutic effects of magnets, specifically in the relief of pain.
A published study (5 May 2003 issue of the Archives of Physical Medicine) by Dr Michael Weintraub on The Effects of Magnetic Insoles on Sufferers of Diabetic Neuropathy (a fairly common painful condition of the feet suffered by individuals affected by diabetes) http://www.scribd.com/doc/6799548/Weintraub-Report-Magsteps concluded that wearing magnetic insoles was able to provide pain relief to a significant number of diabetic patients who participated in the study.
How magnets may work in healing is a rather complex issue but here is a brief explanation.
Another possible reason that magnets may have healing properties stems from research carried out in Japan in the 1950s and 1960s. Researchers found that many city dwellers had a variety of non-specific complaints such as aches in the neck, shoulders, and back, as well as fatigue, none of which could be traced to specific medical problems. It was noted that many buildings in modern Japanese cities are constructed with iron and steel girders in their infrastructures and that such metals appear to have a "magnetic shielding effect" in that they block the penetration of the normal background magnetism of the Earthís magnetic field into the buildings' interiors. It appears that a certain minimal exposure to the geomagnetic field is critical to maintaining health. Early astronauts who spent long periods in Earth orbit, where the geomagnetic field strength is much lower, suffered from an illness that became known as "space sickness". It is now common for Russian and American spacecraft, including the space shuttle, to have magnetic field generators on board which simulate the effect of the normal geomagnetic field. The Japanese postulated that living in steel apartment buildings and working in steel and concrete office buildings for extended periods of time was leading to "magnetic field deficiency syndrome" and that the use of various magnetic appliances or magnetic necklaces seemed to relieve the fatigue and aches associated with this particular malady of modern civilization. In such cases, the magnets worn on the body may be acting to supply some of this "missing magnetism" that is needed for optimal human functioning.
There are a WIDE VARIETY of MAGNETIC HEALING SYSTEMS and PRODUCTS AVAILABLE which can be purchased from numerous different companies.
However one chooses to experiment with Magnetic Therapy, be aware that there are many different products available and that not all of them are created equal so what may work for some people may not work for others.

How magnets may work in healing is a rather complex issue but here is a brief explanation.
- Evidence suggests that magnets appear to improve local tissue circulation and can relieve pain.
- When held against the skin, magnets relax capillary walls, thereby boosting blood flow to the painful area.
- They also help prevent the muscle spasms that underlie many forms of pain - apparently by interfering with muscle contractions.
- They interfere with the electrochemical reactions that take place within nerve cells, impeding their ability to transmit pain messages to the brain.

- Various different sized MAGNETS CAN BE USEFUL IN PAIN RELIEF when placed or taped to the appropriate acupoints on the body that are in the general area a person is experiencing pain (north side facing the body is most often recommended).
- There is also MAGNETIC JEWELLERY in the form of magnet-containing necklaces and bracelets which are said to be energizing and healing.
- In recent years, MAGNETIC BEDS have been highly promoted for their sleep enhancing and rebalancing effects. Some MAGNETIC SLEEP SYSTEMS are pads with an array of magnets that are to be placed on top of the mattress, while some systems are supposed to be placed between mattress and boxspring (often a much more comfortable arrangement).
- There are also VARIOUS PULSED MAGNETIC FIELD DEVICES both commercially available, as well as those being studied in academic research centers for use in treating depression, Parkinson's disease, and a variety of other neurological problems.
- The benefits of magnetism can also be obtained through the DRINKING OF "MAGNETIZED" WATER which has been exposed to either north, south, or both magnetic poles for an extended period of time. Much research on magnetized water has been carried out in the former Soviet Union. This research supports the potential health benefits (such as reversing the calcium and mineral buildup in the walls of arteries throughout the body) of drinking magnetized water.
